New Running Shoes: Hoka One One®

Since 2013, I have been wearing the same brand of shoes. They are very comfortable on my tiny itty bitty feet, provide an incredible stability during my runs, can easily log more than 600 miles in one pair of shoes, and they make me feel like I can fly!

It seems like Hoka One One®  has become very popular lately in the running community, especially within ultra-runners because these shoes provide soft cushioning that really help sore heels and nail-less toes after several miles of running. The shoes are maximalist, meaning that they are huge, although sometimes they look downright orthopedic, compared to any other normal type of running shoes found in running stores. Instead of having pretty dresses at home, I have a nice collection of different colors and models of shoes that I have been buying in the last few years. Today I got a new pair, and I am very excited to try them out on my next run.

Generally speaking, there are two different types of shoes, one type is for running on the pavement, and the other kind is for trails. You may wonder what the difference between one type and the other is… the difference is basically the tread. Road running shoes tend to have a small and flat-like tread that provides speed, and not so much traction; while trail running shoes need a longer tread to have a better grip in rocks, sticks, and mud.

Last Saturday when I woke up, I decided that it would be a good idea to buy a new pair of road running shoes. The ones I already have in my closet have been used for more than 600 miles, and I think it’s time to retire them from long runs at least. So I drove to a popular running store in Omaha that sells products for outdoor recreation, has amazing customer service and a good variety of running gear. When I got there, a young man that was in the back of the store by the running section helped me look at a few Hoka’s.

Needless to say, I bought the teal Stinson 3 that comes with some yellow accents. Those shoes were a dream come true for any person who likes cute running shoes. After I paid for them, I even considered going back to the back of the store where I had tried my shoes on and buy a second pair because they were just beautiful. But the price of these great shoes made me reconsider the decision of getting another pair… I paid one-hundred and sixty dollars for them, and I didn’t want to spend more than three-hundred bucks on shoes. The price was a bit steep, but I believe the quality of these shoes is worth the money you pay for them.

Now, my plan is to run probably 3 slow miles tomorrow to break in my brand new shoes, and probably another 3 or 5 on Wednesday and Friday. It is always a good idea when buying new shoes to start with baby steps to get the feet and legs used to them, and to really know if the shoes are the right kind. I am very excited to try them out, and I will hopefully run my next road marathon in Denver, CO on May 15th wearing my new acquisition!

What are your favorite running shoes?

  1. Cheers to blue shoes. My frist good pair I got (and still own) are the Brooks Cadence. I love them for walking/running. The old shoes I was wearing before made my feet go numb in the middle of my run. Yikes! Shoes are so important. I wish I could have five pairs of runners. 🙂

  2. Okay – I was a little nervous about this because I’m like the least athletic person that exists on Planet Earth. But you are so funny! Your voice is amazing and I loved hearing about these ridiculous clown shoes. 🙂

  3. I have a pair of Hoka Speedgoats for trial and adore them. Not tried the road ones yet but I could be trmpted.

My face have been Brooks gts adrenaline 14’s and find it frustrating they discontinued them. :/ ah well hunt for s new pair that does me equally as proud is on!
